School Closed or Childcare Canceled: One-Day Decision Sheet

Drop-off is no longer possible, but the day still has deadlines. This free, no-signup sheet helps one responsible adult separate confirmed care from hoped-for help, make the next call, and give a realistic update about today.

Created by Parent Reset Co. Use your browser’s Print command for a one-page US Letter copy (or choose “Fit to page” for A4). You can also select and copy the message below.

Start here: Keep your child with a responsible adult while you check options. Write “not confirmed” for any person or place that has not agreed and given a time. You can change this plan as replies arrive.

School closed or childcare canceled: today’s decision sheet

One adult, one day. Write on the lines; the small examples show what belongs there.

Caregiver and child under a roof

Date + what changed:(e.g., Oct. 6, school closed)

My first work / appointment deadline:(e.g., 9:30 meeting)

Who is actually available?

Confirmed adult / place + hours (or “none”):(e.g., me until 11)

Child is with this responsible adult now:(e.g., me at home)

An unanswered text, a possible opening, or someone who helped before is not confirmed care.

Make one next call and set a decision time

Next person / place to ask + how:(e.g., aunt by text)

Need an answer by:(e.g., 9:00 a.m.)

Ask: “Care fell through today. Are you available from ___ to ___? Please let me know by ___ so I can make another plan.”

Send a realistic work or appointment update

“My child’s school / care is unavailable today. I can ___ until ___. I need to confirm ___ by ___. I’ll update you at ___. If that changes today’s priority, please tell me which item matters most.”

Edit the message for your situation and the person receiving it. Do not promise hours or coverage you have not confirmed.

Choose the smallest workable day

One task that must happen today:(e.g., 11 a.m. call)

One task to move, shorten, or ask about:(e.g., move errands)

If no help is confirmed by the decision time, my next safe plan + next update:(e.g., I supervise; update work at 9)

After today

If plans keep changing, save the wording that helped you update others and revise the contacts before the next disruption. For ordinary and hard-day mornings when school or care is open, see the single-mom morning routine. For recurring school-week tasks shared among adults, use the School-Week Ownership Map.
